A Hickory-based crew running 10 to 30 yard roll-off containers across Greater Hickory — from Newton and Conover to Claremont, Mountain View and Long View.

Hickory Dumpster Rental Group runs out of a yard at 6389 Hildebran Shelby Rd in SW Hickory, in the Catawba Valley foothills of western North Carolina. It is a small, owner-run operation sized to run one yard well rather than a fleet spread thin.
The business is run by Garrett Whitener, who grew up around Greater Hickory and started the company after more than a decade of hauling and cleanout work across the Blue Ridge foothills. He kept running into the same problem — homeowners and contractors stuck with a missed drop-off, a confusing bill, or an answering service two states away that had never seen their street. He built Hickory Dumpster Rental Group to be the opposite: a local number, an honest delivery window, and someone on the phone who knows the difference between a tight historic lane off Hickory’s downtown and a wide new-build lot out in Mountain View.
We have run out of the SW Hickory yard long enough to know which Greater Hickory streets are tight, which driveways slope hard toward the road, which low spots stay soft after a heavy rain, and which of the surrounding cities are a quick run and which take real time to reach. Disposal is close by — the Blackburn Landfill on Rocky Ford Road in Newton takes construction and storm debris, and Catawba County runs residential drop-off sites minutes away. That kind of knowledge does not show up on a website; it shows up in a driver who does not need directions.
By the numbers
Figures are indicative of our current operation.
Every call into Hickory Dumpster Rental Group is answered by someone who works out of the same Hildebran Shelby Rd yard as the trucks — not an answering service two states away reading from a script. Whoever picks up the phone can tell you whether your job needs a right-of-way dumpster permit (none needed on private property), and whether a delivery out toward Catawba or Claremont is realistically a same-day run or a next-day one.
That matters more here than it might elsewhere, because Greater Hickory and its neighboring Hickory-area towns are not interchangeable. A container that is straightforward to place on a wide Greater Hickory lot can be a tighter fit on a shared driveway in Newton or a red-clay soil grade outside Maiden, and a team that actually drives those roads is what keeps a quoted delivery window honest instead of hopeful.
The container lineup runs from a 10 yard box, small enough for a garage cleanout or a single-room tear-out, up to a 30 yard unit sized for new construction or a full demolition. The honest answer to "what size do I need" almost always comes down to one thing: is the load dense — concrete, brick, roofing shingles, wet plaster — which hits its weight allowance long before it fills the box, or is it bulky and light — furniture, drywall, general household debris — which fills the box long before it gets heavy.
We would rather size a job right on the first call than have a customer pay an overage charge on a container that filled faster than expected, or rent a 30 yard box that sits half empty. Once a load leaves the property, clean metal, concrete and yard debris get routed for recovery rather than the landfill where the local facilities allow it — good practice on its own, and required outright for several material categories under North Carolina's landfill rules.
Greater Hickory — the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton metro — is a region of around 365,000 people in the Catawba Valley foothills of western North Carolina, about an hour northwest of Charlotte. It spans three counties: Catawba (county seat Newton), Burke (Morganton) and Caldwell (Lenoir), with a string of cities and towns — Hickory, Newton, Conover, Claremont, Maiden, Granite Falls, Valdese and more — each with its own municipal government, plus unincorporated areas governed by each county’s Board of Commissioners. That shape is worth a heads-up before you book. On your own private property — a driveway, yard or jobsite — a roll-off needs no permit at all, which covers most of the jobs we do. If the container has to sit on a public street, sidewalk or right-of-way, the city that governs the address requires a right-of-way permit from its Public Works office before placement (for an unincorporated address, that is the county). There is no cubic-yard threshold and no fire-department permit involved, and NC DEQ — the state environmental and solid-waste authority — does not issue dumpster or street permits. Our yard is in SW Hickory, and the closest towns we serve — Long View, Mountain View, Hildebran and Connelly Springs — are the same-day group. The rest of the metro we cover — Newton, Conover, Claremont, Maiden, Catawba, Brookford, Granite Falls, Hudson, Valdese, Bethlehem and St. Stephens — are each a separate community with its own public-works office. We tell you which office applies to your address before you book, not after.
Hickory Dumpster Rental Group carries general liability and commercial auto coverage, and we can put proof of insurance on file for property managers and contractors who need one before a container hits their site.
Greater Hickory sits in a humid-subtropical, four-season foothills climate, so the weather that shapes our work runs across the whole year: severe summer thunderstorms and straight-line winds, winter ice storms that snap limbs and bring down trees, and the remnants of a hurricane pushing inland now and then — Helene in 2024 was the worst in a generation. Real winters here bring hard freezes, ice and the occasional snow, so cold-weather storm cleanup is part of the calendar too. When a storm moves through, the calls are for downed limbs, damaged fencing and roof debris, and we keep containers and schedule geared for exactly that.
What we stand on
We would rather size a job right the first time than sell a bigger box or leave you eating an overage fee later.
a the local city street permit covers public-street placement, private property needs none, and each neighboring city runs its own process — we know which applies before we deliver.
(828) 624-4167 reaches the same small team that schedules the truck, not a national dispatch center.
General liability and commercial auto coverage, with proof of insurance available for property managers and contractors.
Clean metal, concrete and yard debris get routed for recovery, in line with North Carolina's landfill restrictions on what belongs in a lined landfill.

Yes. The yard is at 6389 Hildebran Shelby Rd in Hickory, North Carolina, and the team that answers the phone, books the route and drives the truck all works out of that same yard — there is no out-of-state dispatch center in the loop.
We would rather not put an invented number on this page. What we can tell you honestly is that the team has run out of the Hildebran Shelby Rd yard for several years — long enough to know which Greater Hickory streets are tight and which of the surrounding cities take real time to reach.
Yes. We carry general liability coverage and commercial auto coverage on the delivery trucks, and can provide proof of insurance to a property manager, general contractor or builder who needs documentation on file before a container arrives.
